Donald Trump, America’s El-Que-De-Nombre-En-Jefe, is fixated on renaming.
My present tally is that He’s renamed the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America, Lake Ontario, as Lake America, New Mexico as New America, Mount Denali as Mount McKinley, the Department of Defense as the Department of War, the U.S. Institute of Peace as the Donald J. Trump U.S. Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, briefly as The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, though parts of the rebranding faced court challenges, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory as the National Laboratory of the Rockies; nine military basses’ names have been restored to previous historical names including changing Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg, and my former Army Post, Fort Hood, from Fort Cavazos, back to Fort Hood.
Trump has floated (no pun intended) renaming one of the two oceans “Trump Ocean” or the “Ocean of the Americas.” He’s renamed ships and planes and government programs and places, and even parts of the Internal Revenue Code; He renamed Palm Beach International Airport as the President Donald J. Trump International Airport (with the airport code changed to DJT) and he renamed Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach, FL, an honorary stretch near Mar-a-Lago, as Donald J. Trump Boulevard.
Plus, he’s got his mug hanging on huge banners in the Lincoln Memorial and on other government buildings. He’s plastered his face in an aggressive stance in passports; he’s printed his face on National Park passes and on coins and currency.[i]
And he’s just getting started: What’s next? According to Mediaite, the list might include: The Strait of Hormuz to Trump Strait; (Maine, Missouri) to America (Maine, Missouri), Paris, Texas to America, Texas, Palestine (Ohio, Texas) to America (Ohio, Texas), Gaza, Indiana to America, Indiana, Lichen species Caloplaca Obamae to Caloplaca Trumpae, New York, New York, to New America, New America, Joe, North Carolina to Sleepy Joe, North Carolina, China, New America to America, New America, Clinton (Maryland, Iowa, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Oklahoma) to America (Maryland, Iowa, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Oklahoma) and Brazil, Indiana to America, Indiana.[ii]
Donald is just madly in love with himself and his ability to belittle the historical names of damn near everything that has somebody or something else’s name or face on it.
Indeed, in the spirit of renaming, I suggest that it is high time that We the People rename Mar-a-Lago. Mar-a-Lago translated to English is Sea to Lake. So, how about we rename Mar-a-Lago, Mar de Mierda? If you don’t speak Spanish, just Google[iii] it, but I think this new name is what Trump is all about.
But, a caution: if you’re golfing at the Mar de Mierda golf course, when you get out of your golf cart, watch where you step.
