The Second Coming of Manifest Destiny

Ronald Johnson was appointed ambassador to get Mexico back in line with Washington’s to-hell-with-the-people agenda. Days after he arrived in the Mexican capital he was guest-of-honor at a far-right dinner hosted by Eduardo Verástegui, a wealthy far-right actor aligned with Bolsonaro, Milei, and Trump. He was also at another gala welcome with members of the American Society, an “independent” business group of which Johnson is the honorary leader, and which dedicates itself to blaming Mexico for drug-trafficking while ignoring massive U.S. involvement in the same trade, as though drug-kingpins weren’t well stocked with U.S. military grade weapons and nourished by its recreational drug culture, money laundering, distribution gangs, and CIA drug-running going back many decades. Donald Trump and Scott Walker Attack the US Press

Journalists are increasingly under fire, figuratively and literally. Figuratively, the most recent victim under “fire” is award-winning broadcast veteran Scott Pelley. I was disappointed, but unsurprised, to see former Wisconsin Governor, Scott Walker, in the Washington Times this month supporting CBS’s firing of long-time journalist Scott Pelley. Forest Service Clearcutting and Intentional Burning is Killing, Not Saving, our National Forests

The essentials to “harden” homes are non-flammable roofs and decks, removal of nearby vegetation, and trimming trees up to 100 feet out from the home. Forest Service logging and intentional burning more than 100 feet from a home does nothing to keep houses from burning down, is a waste of money, and destroys fish and wildlife habitat. Yet the Forest Service continues to massively log our dwindling mature and old growth forests, selling nearly 3 billion board feet of timber in 2025.  Nonetheless, last year an astounding 383,807,000 board feet (enough to fill 80,000 logging trucks) received no bids because the Forest Service is trying to sell more of our National Forests than the timber industry wants to buy. The Trillion-Dollar Alarm Bell

Last week’s SpaceX IPO made Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire, despite the fact that the company has lost tens of billions of dollars since it was founded almost 25 years ago. Shares of the company climbed steadily after markets closed on Friday, pushing its market cap to $2.2 trillion. The public conversation about Musk’s vast wealth often obscures the fact that he is actually a very fancy welfare recipient, having taken billions of dollars from the public coffers by even the most conservative measures. In reaction to the news, Oxfam America’s Nabil Ahmed said, “Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy and a dark day for democracy. But this moment of dramatically concentrated wealth was not inevitable. Musk will be a government-backed trillionaire whose fortune was fueled by an era of regressive public policy choices — decisions rigged by a tiny few to fuel their fortunes, and overwhelmingly supported by political leaders.” More
