From France Across Europe to the United States: Now is the Time to Coordinate Radical Social Movements!

Neither the radical and historic French mass social movement, nor those in Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, and Albania—and who knows what other European countries—are alone in the world. By a very fortunate coincidence, all these youthful, combative, and radical movements are emerging and gaining strength at the same time, alongside the one that is already shaking up the political landscape of the world’s leading superpower, the United States of America. Thus, the top priority for each of them is crystal clear: to take advantage of this rare historical moment—the synchronization of all these movements—to break out of isolation and forge a new internationalism in action by coordinating their efforts to fight, strengthen one another, and together defeat a class enemy that is already highly organized, before it is too late for humanity and our planet Earth…

But let’s take a closer look at what this “rare historical moment” looks like in more concrete terms, starting with the United States, where the outcome of the midterm elections on November 3 could deal a terrible—or even fatal—blow to Trump, Trumpism, and perhaps the international far right. So, who could claim that Trump would be willing to accept his potential defeat in the midterm elections on November 3 without a fight? The answer is clear: No one would dare to say such a preposterous thing! For both Trump’s past and present actions speak to his determination to use every means at his disposal—without exception—to cling to power. But beware: while this observation is shared by practically everyone, there is, on the other hand, almost no one who is drawing the necessary lessons from it. And the first of these is that the day after the midterm elections is already shaping up to be far more important and critical than Election Day itself!

So, let’s talk about it. Given that all the polls point to a crushing defeat for the Republicans—which would result in the loss of Congress and, above all, the Senate—we can already expect that Trump’s (violent?) reaction will shatter whatever remains of the American political system and its traditional balances. However, such a dramatic development in the—already multidimensional and very deep—American crisis cannot help but greatly influence everything happening around the world, including in Europe. This is all the more true given that there is now a radical left in the United States which, despite all its weaknesses and lack of preparation, already represents a truly significant social and political force capable of playing a leading role in the historic events already looming on the horizon of this great country. So, the lesson to be learned is clear: the European left and social movements must not only stop snubbing the United States and its very real and radical left, but they must also take a serious interest in both the many facets of the current historic crisis of North American capitalism and the valuable experiences of their American comrades. And they must do so by taking these into account—by incorporating the upcoming major events and victories of the North American class struggle into their tactical choices as well as their strategic perspectives and orientations!

But beyond all that, capitalizing on their current momentum and prestige, it is high time that the French radical left, as well as French social movements and labor unions, take the initiative to propose joint actions and build bridges with their European and North American counterparts. For example, given that French labor unions are preparing for a (nearly?) general strike on November 5, and Spanish unions are mobilizing for a general strike on November 11—that is, just six days later—one might legitimately ask: Why not a joint Franco-Spanish general strike, which would inspire workers in both countries and provide ambitious ideas for their comrades in other European nations?

Moreover, the coordination of the social movements currently making headlines is greatly facilitated by the fact that they are all composed of young people facing the same constraints, grappling with virtually the same problems, and above all, sharing the same ambition to change this world, which they rightly view as nightmarish and increasingly unlivable. For, beyond the demands they put forward, it is precisely this radical nature of their critique of the current world—which is not understood by the media, the self-righteous, and rulers of all stripes—that drives them to challenge the very foundations of our societies and the capitalist system itself.(1)

So it should come as no surprise that these radical movements strike fear into the hearts of others and unite against them every last bit of fascist and far-right scum around the world. And of course, it is no coincidence that at the head of this frightened rabble, screaming for vengeance, stand the two greatest war criminals of our time: the American Trump and the Russian Putin. Carried away by their racist delusions, they do not hesitate to speak with one voice to say exactly the same thing: that those responsible for what Mr. Putin’s alter ego, Mr. Kirill Dmitriev, calls the “suicide of Western civilization” are… migrants!

Nevertheless, we are witnessing the end of an era and the painful birth of another, marked by the revolts of a humanity that can no longer passively endure the agony of a world that is increasingly unjust, cynical, barbaric, and therefore unlivable. As Che so aptly put it from the UN podium 46 years ago, This great humanity has said ‘enough’ and has begun to move forward”. And despite the overwhelmingly unfavorable balance of power, despite all the weaknesses and lack of preparation among the organizations and movements of those from below, one thing is now certain: there is no salvation outside of these revolts. Provided that they spread and unite across borders to give birth to true democratic and ecosocialist revolutions. The survival of humanity now depends on this…
