The God of Hormuz

You is my friend
I mean: Hugh is my friend
But Hugh no longer understands

They lie so much
to Hugh that Hugh
Can no longer tell

What’s false or true

Nor does Hugh know much
About the god Ahura Mazda

Hugh can’t see

That Ahura is shortened to Hur
and Mazda’s truncated to Maz

Put em together
And what’ve you got?

Hur maz, or Hor muz
Like the Strait of Hormuz

You’ll get there faster
With Zoroaster

The prophet

Who’s sick of Hugh

For tolerating lies

And Mazda, they say, means wise
When really it’s closer to
Placing the mind

And where will you place it?

What’ll you attend to, Hugh?
What can you do?

Will Hugh deviate from fate?
They say the weight
May be too great

But weigh
Can mean both burden
And consideration
Can Hugh even choose?

Will Hugh startle?
Will Hugh start?
Will you depart
From the light to the dark
Like a reflex?

Or will you reflect?
Like a stone in the bed

In the bed of the stream
Awake in the dream
