Sunset’s Soon

Sunset’s Soon

The amber moon sings: sunset’s soon
From Tzin Tzun Tzan, and Tucson,
To San Juan Capistrano —
Do you know about that Saint John?
From Abruzzo?
He enjoyed burning Jews,
and Muslims too,
On stakes. It’s true.
But what did you expect?
As the mockingbirds mock
And the ladybugs lay little eggs
The color of earwax on tree bark
On the sidewalk by the News Building
Its two ton globe
In the lobby shows
Greenland melting,
Kangaroos, koalas too, all burning away
And though you can’t see them
From this distance others are also
Just as you can’t see those things
On cheese
Building up their colonies
Until it’s too late
