I strongly discourage use of slackware!
It has big security holes which I can't find the mail about,
but trust me here!

If you refuse to run redhat (I don't have a clue why?)
I would run debian.  It rocks!!!
Almost as good as redhat, but maybe a bit less commercial.
please take my advise and save yourself 
lots of time!!!
it even installed itself with just a disk or two and it ran fine!
