Problems setting up EmacSpeak
Hey everyone.
I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to tell me what
I've missed in this atempt to install EmacSpeak.
First, this is a fresh install of Linux. Most everything is installed
except X11. Included in that is Emacs (with the NOX package to allow Emacs
to be run with out X).
I've unpacked EmacSpeak and have atempted to make it.
The first snafoo comes when I don't get any DecTalk feedback during the
make. I have a DecTalk Express on Comm1, and I'm trying to use it on
/dev/ttys0 like this....
make emacspeak "dectalk=>/dev/ttys0"
This does not produce any feedback during the make. Similarly, sending
strings of text to /dev/ttys0 doesn't produce any speech either. I'm not
sure if the DecTalk needs some kind of initialization string before it will
speak raw text over the port or not, so I can't be sure that I have a
communications problem. Again, this is a freshly installed system, so I'm
assuming the defaults here. My serial ports are also not using any
nonstandard port addresses or IRQ assignments.
After the make appears to go well, launching EmacSpeak as described starts
Emacs, but I still do not receive any speech from the DecTalk.
It is very difficult for me to dig around in what is going on as I
currently lack any speech access to this system and must obtain help from
nontechy sighted people. I hope that this is something common that can be
semi-easily fixed.
Any help is appreciated.
Best,
Bryan
