slackware probmem... please help!

I just installed Slackware 3.3 on my system using a dos terminal on
/dev/ttyS0. The instalation went fine until I rebooted the system. At
that point, although I was able to log in as root, I the system would hang
when adding a user. More spacifically, it would hang at the very end of
the adduser process when, I think, it whould have returned to bash.
Ctrl-c resuccessfully exited adduser, but I can't log in as that user.
When it should give me a password prompt, the system hangs.

Also, now when I try to log in as root, I get an error that says ``Unable
to change to tty /dev/ttyS0 bad file number''. Having little practical
experical experience with unix and no experience with linux, what should I
do now?

thanks in advance,
Chris
