  The library missing is that for the Athena widget library,
which is part of X11.  You have 2 remedies.

1.  Install X on your system.

2.  There is a binary of Emacs with no X support floating around.
  It is one of the options during a Red Hat install - I don't know
  about Slackware.  You should be able to find it at Sunsite or on
  the archives you probably got with your Slackware distribution.
