Running DOS screen readers under Dosemu

Hello.
I recently attempted to launch Vocal-eyes under Dosemu and run several 
DOS applications, and had difficulties. :)
Dosemu ran fine, and I changed into my vocal-eyes directory and started 
the driver for the Dec-talk Express, which ran fine. Vocal-eyes also 
spoke its introductory message, but when I tried reading various areas on 
the screen, it claimed that they were all blank. Pressing the arrow keys 
resulted in the string 'null' being spoken, instead of the text that was 
there, which leads me to suspect that the problem is being caused by my 
video configuration.
I also noticed that for some reason I could not enter vocal-eyes' review 
mode, which I have configured to activate when the scroll-lock or 
shift-enter is pressed. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
