Realaudio

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi everyone

The following is a bit of a hack to make realaudio work from a remote
terminal. this is just what I use and if anyone else has a better way of
doing it I would be pleased to here from you.

I have sent a comment to progressive networks regarding a none X version,
but not surprisingly have had no responce.

Requirements:
X windows system (I haven't found a way arround this:()
screen - the version which comes with redhat doesn't work. I downloaded
the source, removed the patch for X and recompiled. If anyone wants the
binary I can put it on an ftp sight somewhere (would leb.net be
appropreate for this?).

The realaudio player

some memory to waste whith the X server:)

Oh and a sound card:)

What to do:

start X:

$startx

Then press alt-tab once to make the xterm window active. start screen

$screen

and then detache it

screen -d

Next go to the remote terminal and start screen with the command:

$screen -r

You will now be able to execute raplayer from the remote terminal. for
example to play a ra file called "sample.ra" you would use the following
command:

$raplayer sample.ra

when the sound has finished, press control-c to kill the raplayer.

It is also possible to listen to live braudcasts on the web. using lynx,
download the .ram file and execute raplayer with the filename as it's
argument.(I think you could probably setup a download option for lynx to
do this?)

My system:

486 dx4/100
1.1 gig hd
20 mb ram
redhat 4.0
kernel 2.0.29

I hope this information is usefull.

Regards

Robbie
