After loging in as root on the console, you also could type only this:

    /bin/sh < /dev/ttyS0 > /dev/ttyS0

and then take over to your terminal.  It'll go at 9600 bauds wich is
usually the default baudrate, but it is pretty acceptable for installation
session.
