DIGITAL builds handheld computer...
DIGITAL is building a handheld computer which will use
- yes you guessed it - Linux as its operating system.
It will have the size of a Palm Pilot but will be much more powerful.
They also plan to use DECtalk, text to speech software and speech
synthesis.
Here comes an excerpt of their info page:

Welcome to the Itsy home page!
Itsy is a low-power, high-performance handheld computer developed by
Digital's Western Research Lab and Systems Research Center in Palo Alto.
It offers roughly an order of magnitude more computing power and memory
than a PalmPilot, enabling demanding applications such as speech
recognition.
Itsy is designed as an open platform to facilitate innovative research
projects. The base Itsy hardware provides a flexible interface for adding
a custom daughtercard, and Itsy software is based on the Linux OS and
standard GNU tools.

We are currently forming a mailing list for researchers with a serious
interest in developing and sharing novel hardware or software applications
for Itsy. If you would like to be added to this list, please send a
message to itsy-friends-request@pa.dec.com. Please be sure to include your
full name, mailing address, and preferred email address, along with
a short paragraph describing your interest in Itsy.

Enjoy!
