Cut to the chase, here, no surrounding glimmer just erased to make room for depth of concern on individual faces of hungry & homeless milling around St. Luke’s Weekend Soup Kitchen presenting visages that cancel every petty concern of my own begun to clutter this blank page. They are no crowd I found today. Don’t know names, but their pain is uniquely individuated. Hopelessness & despair are abstractions arising out of brittle, cold bones, coarse, unwashed skin, gnawing emptiness of stomach, aching aching aching in every moving moment, one-limbed, wheelchair, bad eye, torn back, broke brain. Can anyone take for granted man’s inestimable capacity for suffering? Americans, I ask more or less, rhetorically.

Elegy For Joseph Terry Riordan

Shin bone’s connected to the 2005
knee bone,
Knee bone’s connected to the....
Not yours, Joseph Terry Riordan, carefully removed
before the rest of you was buried,
clean bones, wrapped in soft cloth, more famous
than you’ll ever be, given more credence & care
than your sweating, shaking,
nearly blind, depressed body, that dutifully
toured the First Sitting Duck Gulf War,
home free without a scratch,
the only thing shot, your bone density. Ah,
it’s a sad world we live in, Joseph Terry Riordon,
a strange & quarkful world,
out-of-joint as you discovered, depleted uranium
delirium in your bones.
Missiles with a hard on, only dangerous when they explode,
three-hundred tons orgasmic
in the desert, toxic clouds sucked into your lungs, but
the Brits, the Grits, the Yanks denied that your sweating,
depressed, nearly blind, light-sensitive self
could possibly be linked to something atomical, even as
heavy metal rocked & rolled through your system
on its own tour of duty, seeking work
at deconstruction sites, ten years to use you
up, Joseph Terry Riordon,
whose daughter said, "My father lived & breathed
the military", whose wife wonders
what’s floating down her bloodstream because the rumors
of Depleted Uranium’s demise are greatly exaggerated
like Old Agent Orange that
resides in wombs and retired warriors to this day,
but not to worry, if you’re afraid to go outdoors,
Ottawa will come & test you,
& like the New Agers say, it’s a web world we live in,
Joseph Terry Riordon, who’s really to blame
for Alpha Radiation, so
as the second wave of Shock & Awe begins,
we can only shrug & whisper "Rest in peace & may
Uranus, god of the heavens, father
of Saturn, protect & keep you now & forever more,

Of Anything I Am I Make No Secret

Of anything I am I make no secret:
I am on the sick bed, raving all the time...
I may not die like my much younger sister,
Well, I don't  drink from a system
Designed for the suicide.

I drink from a tribe of the lonely city's  dwellers,
Whose faces are lost in the shuffle of the world...
My ancient folk!  They  emerge  from the cellars
To light up for a second  this skyless  household...

I drink a lot from vastness and confusion,
What casts the lurid light on all men of mould...
I  wish, my folk, Great Makers of Illusions,
Would hang the extra moon  on every City Hall !

I may not fall... But may embrace The Angry,
May side with The Gentry for the  minimum  payroll,
May go to war  to seize  some ancient  pantries,
may train  my gentle soul  for death of  the  human  world.

What options are there for those who behold?
Who knows crooks  from  charismatic  angels,
Who  are  no strangers  to the  torture for  gold  ,
Who  has no power, no army  to   avenge it ?

LIfe is on hold,  suspended till  an inspection,
Folks do elections ...( Don't do it!  It is not free!)
I think I'll  plant a tree on the undisclosed location
It's just for my good folk to come and visit me.

There are no gods to answer to your prayers,
And, if  you are not that smart  to build the safety boat ,
Sit down,  write a song, you know what I am saying?
For there is The God in every song we wrote.
