White Skin
by NATE COLLINS

Take note of your skin
my little white friend
and how it has gotten you in
to all the places you've been.

Be aware of the color of your skin
my little white friend
you could call me your kin,
although I have not been
all the places you've been.

Take account of your skin
my little white friend,
seems like a sin
how it still gets you in
to all the places you been
with your kith and your kin.

Take account of your skin
my little white friend
that account would begin
"I am white skin
and priviledged I am
I am not your friend
but yes I have been
amongst your kith and your kin
getting them in
making them think they should win
spreading false pride and sin.

Yes I am white skin
and priviledged I am
I am not your friend
but yes I have been
amongst your kith and your kin
letting them in
making them think they would win
I am false pride and sin.
I am white skin."

Slouching Beasts
By STEW ALBERT

The center of hope
cannot hold
when it doesn't exist,
where is the lost vision
of a something better
utopian civilization?

Reason in reverse
becoming paranoid nightmares
of hope
burned at the stake.

Democracy on the march
in jack boots
doesn't count.

Stew Albert runs the Yippie Reading Room. His memoir, Who the Hell is Stew Albert?, is just out from Red Hen Press. He can be reached at: stewa@aol.com

Insurance
By BARBARA LA MORTICELLA

1.
Big loopy letters dotted with hearts...

Such childish, feminine handwriting
and such heavy consequences...

The insurance examiner's signature.

2.
The client sewed 5000 gunnysacks a day
for a whole year and now can't
use her hands. But we deny
her claim for compensation.

A single mother with three children
in an unheated trailer in the winter--
Why should the company pay for her operation?

We know that she carried water and firewood.
By the time she started at the factory,
she was already a cracked
plate.

3.
The examiner goes home at night
and relaxes with movies. She likes the ones where
ordinary-looking people are really secret
aliens, and the one where, inside the darkness of
toyboxes, pretty dolls turn to cannibals,
begin gnashing their little teeth.

Barbara LaMorticella co-hosts "Talking Earth," a poetry show on radio station KBOO in Portland, Oregon. Her second collection of poems, "Rain on Waterless Mountain," was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. She can be reached at: barbala@teleport.com

The Stone Animals
By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR

after Louise Glück

You gazed at them for so long you
Might have dropped yourself
Into a trance, a reverie--a moment
Of night splintered into your day.
It happens. The overarching trees,
Box elders, I think, pinioned
Themselves against the orange
Horizon, forbidding entry, forcing us
Back into our own square spaces,
Bathed now in cobalt shadows
And the scent of lilac blossoms
Rotting in cans of rainwater.
You can't take your eyes off
Those seven stone animals,
That guard the flower garden,
Eroding into Assyrian shapes,
Winter by winter, until, finally,
We've nearly forgotten them,
All their original names, what
They would come to if called.
