His nuts in a vice. Social movements
The only real hope the brother won’t give in
To what the motherfuckers’ call being realistic.
How to keep the heat on? How to keep the people
Mobilized? Ready to move? Sneaky
Bastards ready to turn hope to shit
Just like that. Why be surprised?
Robert Kuttner holds out sober hope—Events,
The hard pressure of reality & people power
Could move the agenda? Make this symbolic
Moment truly Transformational. It hangs in the
Balance. The odds bleak. Don’t mourn,
Grow cynical. Get off your ass.

Birthday Poem In A Time Of War

No one has to earn the gift of grieving.
It will come of itself, as it does today
Like a single pelican among a crowd of tern
Riding the tidewash, here at Marion Bay.

It began the moment when you left the room
Having set down a bowl of peppermint tea.
At first it merely teased the nostrils. Now the fume of it
Spreads everywhere. It’s not the memory

Of a lifelong friend whose breathing stopped
In his sleep a little month ago, or
Not only that. As if a door in the air
Flung open, and everything we clung to dropped

In an unending wave of sorrow
Down to a black river: the corpses and the burnings
Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
The futility of trying to repair.

I was about to unwrap my seventy-fifth year.
When I turned round, the pelican
And all his water-birds had gone to god knows where.
So sudden the blank water, the blank sky.

Someone might say: But this will pass. Not so.
Each time it enters us it leaves a stain.
The stain deepens and it will remain.

Now time moves us through the wastes of morning
Where we teach our hands to remember this,
Then this. We can neither speak nor kiss.
Stunned in the heavy sunlight we sit, turning

The pages of our magazines, listening for
The riffle of wings along the shore
And, under that, for the tiny voice
That used to remind us: Some things
Are possible. Hang on to that. Hang on.
             

KEITH HARRISON is the author of a dozen books of poetry and translations. His work has appeared in magazines and periodicals in many countries, including The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, and The New Statesman. A former editor of the Carleton Miscellany, his work has been represented in many national anthologies in America, England and Australia. He wants a new language!
Ratta-tat-tat!  Ratta-tat-tat!
The old one has too many homonyms
That sound like war.

"Military machine"; "aircraft carrier";
"bombs bursting in air";
"duty ... honor ... country. ..."

Ker-pling!  Ka-boom!  BAM!

Even "pride," even "love"--
Drafted into service.
Every word has a medal on its ass.
Every word's a hero.
Every word's an honor-guard casket
With a flag draped over.

Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat.
Splat!

Armor-piercing bullets say,
"Accept the world as it is!"
The shock and awe of their logic
Is cancer in children's dreams.

Boom boom boom boom boom boom boom.

Guns talk to guns--
A crimson tete-a-tete.
Nothing succeeds like excess.
Under the din of mourning--
Litigious sirens wailing.

Snap!  Crackle!  Pop!

There is no light except possibly for
Laser-guided missiles, and

Whoosh!

Enhanced night-vision goggles.
