The New Print Edition of CounterPunch, Only for Our Newsletter Subscribers!

The Timebomb Who Would be President

Those who know him well regard him as a deceitful, violent, unstable liar who collaborated with the enemy and then postured as a hero. Meet the Real John McCain in this special, subscriber-only issue of CounterPunch newsletter, reported by Alexander Cockburn, Jeffrey St. Clair and Douglas Valentine. Why did Cindy McCain become a drug addict who, Phoenix doctors claim, at least three times sought medical attention for injuries consonant with physical violence? Why did Ron and Nancy Reagan shun him and try to derail his political career? Under the terms of the 14th Amendment is McCain actually barred from ever sitting in the Oval Office? Find the answers in CounterPunch newsletter. Subscribe now. ALSO, read David Price on the incredible case of Nicolas Flattes, whom the US government is trying to blackmail into becoming a spook! CHEERS IN THE APOCALYPSE
BY GARY CORSERI

Collateral Debt Obligations galore
(and other arcane, bundled securities)
have ransacked my IRAs--and, what's worse and what's more,
appear to have scuttled my hopes for my sixties!

I'm not selling apples, quite yet, from my door,
nor standing in breadlines--but I do feel a draft
coming on strong from a future secure
only in the sense it will be still more daft.

How did it happen?  Who slept at the rudder?
Did fighting two wars fine-hone our stupidity?
Blame Congress or Wall Street or someone Down Under.
We're caught in this maelstrom, seeking lucidity.

The best we can hope for, the best we can muster
is a Mae West tossed at a sinking Titanic.
What next?  What after?  More greed and more bluster?
Whatever we do, we'd better not Panic!

GARY CORSERI has published articles and poems at CounterPunch, Georgia Review, The New York Times, Village Voice and other venues.  He has performed his work at the Carter Presidential Library, and PBS-Atlanta broadcast one of his dramas.  Gary can be reached at Gary_Corseri@comcast.net.

Chinese Restaurant, 1984
BY LINDA UEKI ABSHER

I sit and watch him speak—
As a waitress moves
   rivers
of cold black tea
     across oblong tables.
The hiss of untold tales
   rolls through kitchen doors
      murmuring
   Not Words
       to me.

His talk of Being
   becomes cluttered by the clatter
   of Hunger and Memory
He dissects the dharma
  while I twist paper-napkin prayers
to gods he will never see.

The Dance of the World
  Beginning
goes on behind his shoulder,
      playing out on tv.
I watch
Carefully.
The Dance does not stop
   for words or thoughts
      born from brittle text
        that gives shape to unknowing.

But I cannot stop his sound—
  the White Noise
  that river
  rock
  blood and bone
will not hear.
The Sound of No Hunger
No Memory
No
   Where

A peach-face baby laughs and claps—
The waitress stops her black river creation
      to watch.
Another Dance begins.

LINDA UEKI ABSHER lives in Portland, Oregon and can be reached at absherl@gmail.com.

At the Foot of Wall Street, 1998*
BY Robert Gibbons

They're serving excellent rations at the front in the war on Wall St. It's reported brokers & bankers prefer thick red meat. An elite corps of French wines, Chateau Margaux, 1900, knocked down by their big guns, $10,000 a bottle at Patroon. The battle frenzy is hard to fathom. I read that Iraqi children are too malnourished to play with each other. It makes them too sad to think about their dead friends. Over sixty years ago in the middle of the Depression Berenice Abbott turned her camera on the foot of Wall St. The Whitehall Building remained formidable. Seaplanes at the Downtown Skyport, grounded. There in the foreground of the shot, the two young, unsmiling shoeshine boys. She got it all down in black & white, the spilled blood of childhood.

*Written in 1998, & first published in his book, Streets for Two Dancers, 2004.

ROBERT GIBBONS is the poetry & fiction editor of Janus Head.

Naked/Short
By ROBERT JENKINS

Extinction-level events
are played off in the media,
but behind the scenes
Financial Titans scramble
to cover their ass-etceteras…

Whirling dervishes, soothsaying;
Pay attention to who’s saying what,
and who they used to work for.

Pay attention to who’s paying,
and wonder is this what we’re
working for?

Here a billion, there a billion,
who knows where a billion
went;
John Q and his kid’s kids
got fat pockets
and short attention spans;

So, put somebody pretty on
Dancing with the Stars
and tell the candidate to use
his thumb to point
instead of his index finger

when he makes his speech about
how hard he’s gonna work to avoid
actually exposing any of his partners
in crime.

ROBERT JENKINS lives in San Antonio, Texas. Robert is a poet, musician and news analyst. You can read and listen to more of his poetry at www.moonmind.com
