The Church of Saint Sarah
BY BARBARA La MORTICELLA
Into the
wild the
whole country
marches
at the head Alaska
dragging the lower 48,
bloated body of Cerberus.
Pray for salvation at the oil pumps
in the church of Saint Sarah,
who appeared to us children after a burning
Bush a vision of the
end of the world
in hand,
Then surprised us appearing
in holy body herself--
What a great country!
Jumping right out of the American kake,
her breasts shooting bullets.
Saint Sarah the miraculous
who birthed a baby out of another's body
could fight Russkis she can almost see
her girded loins pumping out
legions of soldiers and baby makers!
BARBARA LA MORTICELLA is a poet and radio host in Portland, Oregon and can be reached at barbala@teleport.com
post time
BY JOHN HOLT
one of them remembers,
the one raised around sports and the trappings of a privileged birth,
the days of American Sportsman
cape buffalo in Africa, trout in Ketchum
partridge and pheasants far out on the Dakotas
way back on ABC TV,
back when networks championed quality
instead of marketing scams devised by
young punk ad execs with no life skills,
with Bing Crosby and Phil Harris
and another batch of boys –
hunting, fishing, drinking buddies -
similar in many oblique ways to the boys on this corner today
raising hell all around the place
fishing for sea run browns in Tierra del Fuego
lion hunting in Kenya
dove shooting in Mexico
tarpon fishing off of Boca Grande
tracking Faro sheep in the Yukon
ancient lake trout in Great Slave
and at the end of every day
as a wild landscape sun touched down
there were the drinks and
Phil Harris raising his tumbler high
saying “post time” with the joy of a real drinker,
the one of the boys who remembers tells the story to the others
they all nod and think that this is one hell of a way to travel
so they sally forth to the Socialite Club
stroll in with great aplomb, panache,
a certain air most commonly associated with those of regal birth rights
after all they have twenty-eight bucks and change between them
a twenty found along the curb hiding among the litter of
cigarette butts, gum wrappers, hand bills for strip shows,
and eight crumpled, wadded dollar bills retrieved from well-worn pockets
along with spent matches, bits of tobacco, a Gerber knife,
they order as one entity
“triple bourbons on the rocks for each of us”
the bartender looks at them with curiosity
they are assured, happy, confident
an unusual occurrence along this hard-time part of down
where the cool wind blowing down from high country
is normally knocked senseless by desert furnace action
before this breeze, gale, tornadic gust shoots down streets, around corners
whipping up dirt, dust, paper, making life a little tougher than it needs to be
“and one for yourself, buddy”
when the drinks arrive they all raise them eagerly,
the bartender getting right with this one,
laugh and smile at each other and then at the grinning bartender
and with the best of Phil Harris in a neighborhood he’d never visit
they say firmly with the rare power of recognition that they too are hunters
of a peculiar sort, and more importantly,
men who stay with it hard times or not
so they say as one
“post time”

Drill This!
BY PETER BUKNATSKI
("The More You Drive,
The Less Intelligent You Are"
--Miller, REPO MAN)
cheaper gas prices!
that's my #1 priority
as an American
I say drill all over
drill on the beaches
in the fields
in the hills
on land and sea
we shall never stop driving!
environment?
war?
animals?
children?
what about my fucking car?
I can't afford to feed it
it's just parked there
wasting away
thank God its extra loud alarm
still works
get away from my car
you fucking terrorist cat!
I'd join a support group
but I can't afford
to drive there
so drill like a bastard!
I say
and then drive like a sonofabitch!
I want to save my car
I want to fuck my car
I want to fuck your car!
I want to make baby cars
so fill her up I say
we'll drill and drive to Heaven
or Hell!
I don't care
I just want to drive there
I'm a fucking American!
on 3 bucks a gallon or less
I'll drive all the way to Baghdad
get out of my way ragheads!
give me that fucking oil!
oh God!...oh CAR!...I'm coming!...
...was it good for you too?
