Small Talk

This one—tack-witted, sharp of tongue—
thinks he’ll die soon, and so,
smokes on (although he loves his wife).

He has made peace at 62 (my age)
with demons, destiny, and even
the C.O.P.D. that will
kick him in.

We ramble on on his southern porch,
his whisky tone better than my northern drawl.
Following an ancient beat, we weave
jeremiads for our country’s loss—
the country of our fathers curls
like smoke in the pale, yellow light.

Nobody grows old, we conclude.
One day you are young
and the next—
you are full of all you’ve ever been.
After that—you’re smoke.

There is a way to look at a plant, he says,
and everything you know about plants
is in the contemplation of that moment.
And that … is dialogue.

We can also assure one another
that thoughts like ours have slunk around before,
were lofted by grizzled men before
campfires, under shooting stars,
and may yet float again
in the froth of this world’s flotsam

If not … in another world. …
If not … then merely in
this moment’s grim
sufficiency.

Rare Butterfly & Citizen

Buffeted by today’s high winds the black butterfly with brilliant gold-lace frill clawed tight to the railroad tie causing me to crouch down low for a long time admiring her delicate features & wild will. It could have been the highlight of the morning, but that already occurred when I said hello to the handsome black man, Walter Phillips, in the orange cab of the Central Maine Power truck in the parking lot of Whole Foods. I’d dealt with him before a few times in my previous job, letting him into meter rooms at the high rise. Somehow the conversation turned toward politics in which we exchanged our mutual fears: worries over the capacity of the electorate to vote without being fooled again; references to the Great Depression, financial collapse, he was glad to have a “safe job, everyone needs power,” while I shared the fact I’d recently been laid off; somehow the desperate straits of the people of Haiti got alluded to, poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, eating dirt, etc. Then after Walter let me know that he majored in history & minored in criminal justice for a reason, he made a leap beyond my own imaginings, saying he wakes up every day thanking his lucky stars America hasn’t declared Marshall Law, yet. As he described it, & the potential reasons for such a scenario, I stood there getting chills up & down my spine, knowing I wouldn’t put anything past the current administration with its own criminal tendencies, reinforcing for me just how crucial the next election is. So, as much as I was in awe on my daily walk by the surprise sighting of a rare butterfly with wild will, it may well be that the conversation with this fellow citizen has the more lasting impact.

Dregs

Cold, gritty coffee dregs
are still consumed, cup turned
up like they actually taste good;
Really, just hoping/praying for a few
more drops of Joe;/need that caffeine to
make my brain go:  the body’s black gold…

Lipstick Pigs and Pseudo Islamo-communists,
Mad Cows and grey Pit Bulls;
Guess we’re all straining for the dregs like they
actually taste good;
Hoping/praying for a little Loose Change:  crumbs
From tables bin-Laden with gefilte fish and Texas tea.

David Foster Wallace, Writer, Artist, Teacher of Imagination, His Milieu

Never met him but we
overlapped in Claremont,

college burg under Old Baldy.
Ithaca with palms–and Vons.

Once witnessed a half-hour
discussion in the village re-
garding locking a bike

to a bench. Postures were sold. Loudest
carrying male resonance.  All of it be-
reft of mother wit from any sex. My

muffin, large,
lasted throughout.

Across Yale Avenue,
bulletin boards ragged

with rain-splotched messages
and protest verse. Like

the ones at namesake in New
Haven, Broadway & York.  Ah

anyway, shit! For Hail
such bookish towns
of idea and passion!

Hours pissed away!
Just terrific!

Few Profs stoned on Philosophy;
students not requiring it. (This

the Ship of Happy Fools you left,
Professor Wallace.)  And with

enough punctured amours
overall to fill infinities of hot
air balloons against brilliant
mashed-potato clouds! Gray-

ing poets with romance
in their pants. Punic Wars
ripping English Departments.

And Hurts! real and imagined,
college-wide. From Civil
Engineering to Modern Dance.

Petty. Funny. But so what?  Most not
ground to corporate hamburger.
Think that’s not an Ace?  Wow! 

David Foster Wallace, rest,
who extracted magic from
the lives we rough out, plus

academic messes. Thus, and so,
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,

For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
