Once again I take a solder's
stand, I hear the drums and the call to march
Like so many times in so many places I take my place among the
ranks
To do what I believe to be right and change the world
In the hope that this will truly be the last day and put an end
to war
But too many battles and too many wars over too many years
Have proven that the last day may never come
I am tired and old I have seen this too many times
For my heart is heavy and my soul is in pain
But I keep on marching and I keep on fighting
In the hope that maybe one day we will stop and learn
That fighting and war just lead to fighting and war and not peace
What will it take to stop this circle
What will it take to learn to live in peace
What will it take to love and not hate
When will we ever learn
For we have been taught to love and not hate
To turn the other check and to love our enemy
And we clam to believe and we worship our Gods
But we forget those words and take-up the sword
To fight and kill for greed and power
And hate for lust and revenge
Now the drums beat again and the lines are being formed
There is a storm gathering, a storm like no other
Once again a nation is divided, once again we march
Will this be the last day or just another day in the battle
Will we learn this time or just make the same mistake
Will we ever stop or will we just keep on fighting
I am old and my heart is heavy my soul is in pain
But I have hope that one day we will learn
And stop the hate and learn to love
That is why I march, that is why I take a stand
Without guns or swords I go to this battle
To show the world that there is a better way
And that truly this will be the last day.

Their Little Bones

Remembering their little bones
the companeros
stomp on darkness
set forth from death
wander the tender night
I hear their voices like living faces
that burn in the midst of battle
that fall
that rise up
protest
long for love
a better different love
they are gone
but they are not at peace
they beat on
the door of this prison or
this system
Rogue hold out his light or his dignity
Pedro writes on the walls of thirst
Claudia spills out her beauty as if
dressed in clarity
they ask nothing
for themselves
they go naked
the world bleeds from their pores
they suffer their pain gallantly
they are waiting for us to begin again
Juan Gelman, the Argentinian poet, today searches
for the remains of his daughter-in-law, Maria Claudia. She was
kidnapped in Buenos Aires, Argentina in August 1976, along with
her husband, Marcelo Ariel, Juan Gelman's son. In October 1976
Maria Claudia, 19 years of age and eight and a half months pregnant,
was carried off to Montevideo, Uruguay by members of the Uruguayan
military, while Marcelo Ariel was murdered. She gave birth to
their daughter that November in Montevideo. Afterwards Maria
Claudia was murdered in cold blood. The daughter was given to
an infertile couple from the Montevideo police and only in 2000--23
years later--was she found, with the help of a worldwide letter
writing and petition campaign. Thereupon the president of Uruguay
promised to expedite the release of all available information
on the case. The search for Maria Claudia is at the same time
the search for all the disappeared persons in Uruguay.
