The First Time He Ever Saw a Face

The Man in the Moon
thought of Armstrong’s boots on the ground.
A flag? – he shuddered, marveled.
He remembered Neil’s departing words,
"a great leap for mankind."
Anymore, the Moon was a less quiet place,
not really somewhere a non-person could retire,
control tides, play golf, drive white Tiger balls
on Mercury’s back nine, and sleep until nightfall.
The Man in the Moon
looked down into a long void,
and like the Little Prince,
he wondered what it’s all about.
He recalled Apollo 11's journey home.
heard happy R.E.M. music
played in his honor,
and overheard prayers of the faithful.
"He shall turn them from darkness to the light."
Intrigued, his mind went silent for a time –
contemplated soldiers chasing each other
along the Khyber Pass,
space weapons on mad scientists’ tables,
people with nothing to eat.
In a way, he felt fortunate Earth’s Moon
was deprived of clean crater air, trees of life,
and a human impulse to kill.
Before passing away for another day,
he must talk to Neil Armstrong.
Never saw him much since the tired
first little step thirty years ago, and
the Man in the Moon wanted to know
how to move minds, how to get sperm into egg,
how to turn over leafs, avoid dark sides.
If it’s all right with Lunar Border Patrol,
he’d like to see Neil again, rehash the past,
talk about old triumphant times, Harvest Moons,
great leaps forward, Summer of ‘69.

If You Can’t Take the Heat, Get Off the Planet

I am a little plague germ.
I lead a busy life.
This is no joke or vague term:
I and my plague germ wife,
Distributing our toxin,
Contributing to death,
Help change the world as pox in
Its lungs that wheeze for breath.
The temperature rises.
It may be past recall.
To love and to be wise is
No help, no help at all.
Still there’s no use in grieving.
Some others will come round,
I guess, to eat our leavings
As we ate all we found.
