The Tragedy of the Elephant Who Dreamed of Entering a Bird's Cage
By ADRIAN GRIMA

I heard this unusual story
sometimes told by the aged
about an elephant whose dream
was to enter a bird's cage.

So the elephant decided
to widen out the door
and with a little pen-knife
at the front bars he tore.

He happily prepared
to set a foot inside
but was suddenly halted
by a thought that crossed his mind.

This cage had been a cage,
but a cage it was no more
for a cage is something you can close
and this had lost its door.

What fun is entering a cage,
he brooded in a huff,
if it isn't what it once had been,
having been widened so much?

His dream went on to haunt him
robbing his nights of sleep,
he felt he was inside a cage
and could never break free.

Adrian Grima lives and teaches in Malta.

If A Hammer
By ADAM ENGEL

I'll try to make terse
these dry polemics
set tearfully to "verse:"
another boo, a boo,
a boo-hoo spewed about
"our" tragic Curse:

THE MAN'S insatiable greed:

perpetual gush-spray toxic
is HIS seed, and deep,
impenetrable, HIS purse.

Cosmic Karmic Application of
Maxwell's Silver Second
("law," not "hammer") could
fix HIS wagon, boy, but good.
"If only someone would --"
Time-warped goner. Big Time loser.
Rickety tickety tock,
YOUR planet's outta stock,
Doc.

Sing, Muse,
the anger of my hammer
smashing lineaments
of star-crossed
chancre-spangled love;
defacing faces;
ball-peen tender
every rough-cute
television countenance
("somebody's baby, once")
chop chop
to goo, to Human be;
mother of bad hair days;
pulpy, resonant awareness of
disfigurement, disharmony, disgrace
strewn in torsion,
limp like laundry;
liposuction on the kitchen floor:

Rorschach for the house-bound,
the asthmatic, the agoraphobic;
the tired, huddled, massive,
yearning to breathe free.

"Lick it. Go on, lick it,
lick it, do --"
what I tell you to...
do.
Say, what I say.

Tastes like iron
tastes like tool
tastes like blood

of morning sickness
mourning sad,
breakfast candy myth
of chewy-chocolaty
divine rage of
"who" not "what"
rolled loosely within
flammable, hammer-able,
firm, yet mortal,
vulnerable skin.

Somebody's baby, once,
somebody's kin.

Death in E Flat
By CHARLES ORLOSKI

At Chicago's Lollapalooza Festival, Patti Smith performed the scathing new protest song Qana, about civilian deaths in Israel's conflict with Hezbollah. She introduced the song by asking a crowd of stunned families how they would feel if their kids were "blown away by missiles." Rolling Stone, "Three Days of Rock," September 7, 2006

From stunned centerstage,
a scathing-voice shrieked:

Because the night
belongs to Islamo-Goebbels;
Sabbath, bloody Sabra & Shatila lace,
death to appeasement, Red Sea mirrorballs,
K-Street liberals -- only Bolton has balls!
Enemy's worse than Floyd's 'Animals,'
pigs with wings, they listen to New York Dolls.
They're seen at Dixie Chick concert halls,
concealing Ecstasy beneath designer overalls.
They case City Hall, besmirch fab-four Paul,
and conspire to rock Niagara Falls.
Dead Sea gulls, Keith Richards falls,
Hezbollah missiles whistle Lou Rawls.
Our kids 'are wasted!' -- roaming draft-free malls,
pretending not to hear Bush's London calls,
"exposing all his love for every little thing." (1.)

(1.) From Patti Smith's poem "Libya."

Nature Man at the Swimming Pool
By ROBERT A. DAVIES

The strange enchanted man
watching his grandson do the dolphin
length of the city pool
knows, clear as the bulbous nose
on his face, that in his skin
the boy, free, is a dolphin
that tomorrow, flippers by his sides,
will slip thru our nation's turning tide
U.S.A. 2005
