Yard Sale America
By PETER BUKNATSKI
these things were my life
but my life is for sale now
in a country gone nostalgiac
for other people's treasures
the home has been sold
the wife and children gone
and I am left with the pocket
change of American dreams
old records from the sixties
and all the books that said
so much about love being
the most important of things
but love was for sale too
I should have made a sign
that gives these things
their worth in joy and profit
we got this far in a game
where losers must disappear
where torn boxes full of things
say 'Just Take It' take it all
Peter Buknatski lives in Montpelier, Vt.
