Luis of Shenandoah

I remember how picturesque
was the old coal mining town
the first time I saw it in 1996.
A 45 minute drive on I 81 South,
the 2nd Hazleton exit, future site
of a cargo airport, and
Route 940's cut through pine woods,
and a breathtaking descent into
Shenandoah Valley.
I noticed a miner’s memorial, a V.F.W.,
ethnic churches, a boarded-up Five & Dime,
strip mines, row houses, graffiti,
and finally, destination Kowalonek’s
Kielbasy Shop -- legendary home of fresh
& smoked kielbasa.

In my household, there is a school-to-food
pipeline, and what I know of Shenandoah
consisted of four basic things:
1.) A 1965 movie starring James Stewart,
2.) Incredible rings of kielbasa,
3.) In the 21st Century, many Mexicans went
   there for work in Hazleton’s huge warehouses
   and,
4.) There’s nothing to do there.

Through all the gloomy commotion this week
surrounding the murder of an “undocumented,”
I stood United upon the “No Child Left Behind”
migrained principle, and well aware of the
anthracite proposition that 25-year old
Luis Ramirez, father of two, was beaten
to death by Shenandoah teenagers,
just for living in his Mexican skin.
“Get over it, he’s dead” I heard a guy tell Corbett
on WILK’s Tuesday afternoon talk radio show.

Well, did I get over it?
Faster than the authorities ...,
and tomorrow I return for more Kielbasa
and perhaps acquisition of white horse radish.
Who exactly was Luis Ramirez anyway?
After the murder, rumor mill had it that
Luis’ wife said “all he ever wanted was
to give his children a life he never had.”
(the nerve of such people?)

Inside Kowalonek’s Kielbasy Shop,
a Mexican lady dressed in a white apron let me
sample Krakowska, a fresh smoked ham
“Umm, tastes real mucho,” I said.
With hopes of getting a date next time around,
I hid my wedding band, romantically winced at her,
and purchased a painted glass candle holder
depicting the Virgen de Guadalupe for $12.99.
(Words full of love printed on the back said Mary
appeared to Juan Diego in the mountains of Mexico.)

She handed back my debit card, and sweetly said
“See you before Thanksgiving, Carlos?”

Outside, the hot air of Shenandoah
going nowhere in July.
Luis’ coffin enroute to Mexico –
the hearse passed by perspiring cops
who kept lookout for punks
who mocked their black-striped nylon pants.
What’s that warning a bystander heard?
“Tell all your Mexican friends
to get out of town ”
Did he really work two jobs?
And he only wanted a “BETTER LIFE”
for his kids?

O C’mon --
What kind of education system
did he have in goddamn Mexico?
The body and blood of Luis Ramirez
gradually took shape in my mind,
and I wondered how he ever got past
Sierra Madre, Border Patrol,
F.D.A. “Q.C.” tests, and into my nervous system.

Enterprise Institute & Daily Standard,

making Rosy roll her slack ass
& flutter her dead eyes. She’s gone,

too, unfortunately,
in the teeth.

Whole world sighs, hugely
resonant soul, in utter love-
liness.
