As mothers weep
For their children's eternal sleep
And lovers mourn
Those that will never be born
New Yorkers empathise the plight
Of English counterparts tonight
London streets awash with blood
The politicians insist we flood
The world with vengeance
War to alleviate the tension
Manipulation of the facts
Forcing humanity to react
In the ways of the aggressors
Creating a cycle that will not let us
Find the truth behind the lies
The real reason the facts get disguised
As investigations behind closed doors
Ensure the majority is ignored
No say in how we will respond
Just a war train that carries us along
We need to take a moment
Pause before we seek atonement
Ensure we have the right perpetrator
Not act against our better nature
The public needs to be involved

Two tired looking men
Playing twangy stringed instruments
Singing in late twilight
Violet skies of Istanbul
White birds flew patterns
Young men and women
Flitted near the platform
For image and angles=20
To capture the unique
Moment on digital technology
The harmony of men
Their thin gray hair
Blowing with gentle breezes
Their comfortable bellies supporting
Instruments to accompany melodic=20
Poems somehow demanded reproduction
Time and space had
No claim Originality surrendered
To the eminence gris=20
Inside tiny cameras that=20
Directed operators to shoot
Did the men sing
To recall the past?
The fall of Byzantium?
The collapse of Ottomans?
Did they name emperors
Who brought disgrace to
The Turkish people=E2=80=99s reputation?
Or did their words
Capture the surreptitious movement
Of a woman gently
Sliding her delicate hand=20
Onto her lover=E2=80=99s leg?=20
Ancient battles flashed in
Notes and riffs in
Positions of the moon
The gruff voices recited
Lessons from times of
Dervishes and delights metaphors
Of possibilities and demise
They bowed to applause
Camera flashes popped paparazzi
Darted for positions to
Capture essences in virtual
Time as one paunchy musician
Picked a crumb from his
Hanging mustache and
With helping hands descended
From the platform to=20
A familiar chair below
The lights of importance
Dimmed amidst a rising
Black Sea moon a
Muezzin=E2=80=99s electrified crackling voice
Demands attention from the
Departing crowd the musicians
Placing their strings in
Leather do not heed
The message the lovers
Hold hands the cameras
Hang by straps indicating
That the event has=20
Passed and warnings to
Praise God fall on

I remember he majored in
Business: Administration
worked two jobs, one
flipping meat-pucks at
"MacDonald's," the other
doing god-knows-what
for the Faculty Lounge.
Work-study, working class,
work work work
Body builder man of steel
pumped iron
church on Sundays,
awkward in suits,
brawny bulky
no believer, really,
the regimen his mother
when he was
the ritual
you know how it is you
Do your duty
save your soul
try not to think
so soon it's done,
the people leave,
he volunteers to
Lacked the raw gut cruelty
to "make it,"
destined to work hard,
not smart, but hard,
live life
healthy clean
grim morbid cheer
despite the cunning orifice
that opened him in dreams.
He
hated, feared, despised
the night, yeah,
blessed be the
Early Bird alarm-clock
six am metallic chirp
summons to work:
command type print
type print command
print type print
command. command. command.
workout:
run push lift
stretch fart exhale, for
Night
came soon enough and often
Night
swallowed him whole and endlessly,
so deep he trained himself
-- discipline, discipline --
to know and acknowledge:
"this is a dream, this is only
a dream I will wake to work
eventually, soon, even...NOW!"
Indeed he would bob to the
surface
gasping
like a diver up for air
rigid
like a cartoon Brave at pow-wow
startled
(scared, actually, scared shitless)
sweat and urine
soaking his pajamas
wife curled fetal beside him
(oh yes, wife: stylish, vague;
spooked by his "episodes", never
failed to panic; but she stayed, for
he was a decent man, a gentle man,
built like Achilles, though always
tired, tired -- well no wonder!).
Escaped, again. Again. But
one
Night
-- this is fate, inevitable --
in the slow violence of Time,
he'll lose the will, the speed,
the discipline
to surface before Ectomorph
(that junky drunk phantom:
black teeth, thin lips,
filth caked under long,
cracked, nicotine nails)
takes him down
deep, hard, merciless,
and worse:
calls him back again,
back back again,
to decadent descent,
curse and finality
of Memory and Sleep.
