Goya in Times of War I don’t know, & don’t have a lot of ammunition to waste, but it seems like we go from day-to-day, week-to-week, in some inattentive mentality, where once was Caesar, then Napoleon, ultimately Bush. It’s as goofy & unlearned of the past as the latter’s smirk. We get attacked once; the whole world’s supposed to explode. This week we find out major oil companies want to control Iraqi oil without any seeming conflict that they had a hand in the invasion, nor for that matter, day-by-day rise in energy costs. Lives for oil, that’s their underlying tradeoff, not encapsulated in overt ad, slogan, or motto. The Times & Wall Street Journal have feature articles this week on the Prado’s show, Goya in Times of War. I want, desperately, to go, but more than that, I’d like to see some contemporary artist use black ink & oil paint to expose this blockheaded tyrant, these secretive CEOs for what they really are, juxtaposing positions of power to lame eunuchs inside grey suits, red ties, or aircraft carrier flight jacket. Make it subtle, but unseemly, & as eternal as Goya’s brilliant revelations of the ineptness of royalty, or the results on the ground, the human toll, those utter individual & mass catastrophes of War. Tropical New England I was talking to a friend in southern New England yesterday when the phone started crackling and she said, “Gotta get off, the afternoon storms are moving in.” But she had just enough time to tell me that for the past month in Connecticut it’s been like living in the tropics. Like clockwork every afternoon about four the sky darkens, thunder booms, and the clouds let loose with a gully washer. Now this gal is no spring chicken, lived in Manhattan and Connecticut for more than a half century, and she says she’s never seen anything like it. “It’s like the tropics,” she said. “Banana republic, banana republic weather!” I said, and hung up.
