The Vet Lets It All Hang Out
By ROBERT A. DAVIES

It whispers to me, this spirit
Blow it up.
Shoot the corrupt bastards.

In the not-so-recent Korean War
this voice became a scream:
you could do anything
I mean like shooting ducks:
old gook planting rice,
watch him jump!
We were so free
women asking for it
it didn't really matter.

Of course we were all higher than kites
and lowly grunts did as expected.
I still have a souvenir,
French for One-Eyed Dick.

Well that's all history
now I'm a pacifist:
which keeps me civilized.
Yet that persistent whisper.

Robert A. Davies lives in Portland, Oregon.

Poetry Goes To Hell
By JEAN GERARD

Poets and other writers are in style now.
They win prizes named "Booker" and "Caldicott"
and -- for heaven's sake - "The National Poetry
Awards" or (for a small fee) "The Tor House Annual."

People sit and listen to them talk
and then read what they just said, only better.
Let me rephrase that. There was a time when . . .
(Please refrain from clapping.)

But that was before I was invited to the White House
and refused, offering an acid reply instead,
or shortly after Tagore renounced his knighthood
which Salman Rushdie accepted last week.

Even though -- or maybe because -- he knew
it would make the mullahs mad and someone
would have to run interference for him with Allah
in order to prevent another war.

Then there's Pinsky coming out this week
in the Wall Street Journal with those "urgent"
Poems from Guantanamo like -- yeah! --
plenty of time to read and think and write,

but in Arabic? What came through in translation
of the agony, madness, torture, suicides
attempted, interrupted, frustrated by seeing
Holy Koran afloat, framed by the toilet seat?

Even though we all love the tom-foolery of words
and don't feel alive unless we get a critique
from the group or go to a workshop in Santa Barbara,
still -- and I think you will agree -- enough is enough.

Jean Gerard lives in Los Osos, California.

The Prosperity Prayer
By CHARLES ORLOSKI

Denied tenure thrice,
I have withdrawn protest of DePaul,
submitted to the snickers of United Way.
I am thankful for a dollar cheeseburg,
I commit myself fully & trustfully
to Bob Barker's replacement --
Wheel of Fortune, hope of hopes,
give me a marked-down vowel, Vanna!

Out on bail, disconsolate, I am frail.

I confess ignorance of the Patriot Act,
I delight in the missionary position,
I don't meddle in Iraq.
To my next door neighbor, a retired librarian,
I boast of literary & sexual prowess.
(In a dark apartment, electric bill unpaid,
we meditate on nuclear power, & read aloud
Mitch's five people you meet in heaven.)
I can remember Rabbi Kahane,
I strive to forget U.S.S. Liberty.
I wonder if bin Laden means to turn up here?

You know, O Lord, You must know
I have given away all possessions to the rich.
I follow the Merchant Imperium Party (MIP),
established in Barletta's Hazleton, Pa, 2007.
I have eaten from the vine, sing "I me, me mine."
I want illegal immigrants to go home.
(I wonder what walls they shall build for me?)

O Lord, I have kept the "Road" Commandments.
"Thou shall not throw finger at drive-by Oligarchs,"
is my golden rule.
I denounce bicycles, I support rickshaws;
I shall set up an altar for Cerberus & Cheney.
O Lord, won't you come to your senses,
& lease me a Mercedes Benz?

Charles Orloski lives in Taylor, Pennsylvania.
