with patriotism and prayer
Bushies keep their cruelest crimes
in the shadows of cover-up.
Secret prisons
in private places
governed by hidden constitutions
permitting broom handle rape
if prisoner's penis
is first fondled.
Military draft
clandestinely restored
applied to soldiers fighting in Iraq
who completed contractual obligations.
Johnny can't come marching home
forced to stay in hell
without choice
no longer a volunteer soldier.
Americans kidnapped into the army of blood,
not allowed to scream.
Restored draft,
hard-core torture and a happy harvest
of greedy corporate rip offs
hidden in Cheney's right to privacy and silence
do not disturb signs
fencing off the White House.
Silence is
their greatest gold.

Than the War

Worse than
the war, the endless, senseless war,
Worse than the lies leading to the war,
Worse than the countless deaths and injuries,
Worse than hiding the coffins and not attending funerals,
Worse than the flouting of international law,
Worse than the torture at Abu Ghraib prison,
Worse than the corruption of young soldiers,
Worse than undermining our collective sense of decency,
Worse than the arrogance, smugness and swagger,
Worse than our loss of credibility in the world
Worse than the loss of our liberties,
Worse than learning nothing from the past,
Worse than destroying the future,
Worse than the incredible stupidity of it all,
Worse than all of these,
As if they were not enough for one war or country or lifetime,
Is the silence, the resounding silence, of good Americans.

Ruth St. Clair, on the anniversary of her birth.)
1.
And so I dreamed her
Standing out among
The disappearing elms
On the piedmont
Of the Blue Ridges
In 1924 or so Virginia
Still a child in the grip
Of a febrile language
And ancient stories
Of a time when
They sent her
To catch chickens gone
Wild in the unruly woods
Above Rocky Mount.
They said: look for them
By the ruins of
A limestone chimney
Rising like scaffolding
Inside the crowding forest
And keep your eyes
Open for the shanks
Of barbed wire swallowed
Back into the bodies
Of old oaks.
Someone died and left them
On their own she said
To learn the old ways
From grouse or wild
Turkeys. To hide
From redtailed hawks
And copperheads
and nest at the skinlike
feet of silver beeches.
Perhaps feral is too strong
A word--the longing for
Domesticity won't be
So easily cured. Still
The eggs never hatched.
There were places
She was afraid to go
To find them.
The spots where
Light streamed through
The conjoined canopy--
Those were strange
And dangerous
Sites. Sacrosanct,
She said, like marking
A place of death.
And it doesn't stay
Still, the light, but moves in
A disconsolate circle.
And the ground light
Touched grew different
Plants-gone, burned
Away, were
The bloodroots and
Giant white trilliums
Their places taken
By day lilies and
Blue irises, fighting
Back the wild,
The dark intrusions,
Blooms turned
Toward the sun.
Nearby there
Would be dogwoods
In flower, during
The time the wood
Warblers first pass
Through, their blossoms
Tinged, in the odd
Forest light, blood
Red, the blood
Of Jesus, her
Preacher said.
Once I kneeled
In the center of
That circle and I
Pawed at the ground
Combing and parting
The sedge like strands
Of my mother's hair,
She said, but I left
Only scratchings
And unreadable
Signs on the Earth.
And then I looked
Down a snake
Hole in the clay:
There a red
Demon crowing.

There is a graveyard
Just above Rocky Mount
Where a body lies buried
Above ground water and hard
Limestone, under red clay
And the leaves from black
Gums and pin oaks,
Purple crocuses pushing through.
