Sleeping Truck Driver Spills Oreos

Fourteen tons of Oreos spilling off the truck
all over the highway
at least we’d be together
Brotherhood Week in the USA
some of us white on the outside
others black on the outside.

Years ago I was white on the outside
black on the inside
according to Miss Williams
who was herself not an oreo at all
black through and through she said.
Now here we were together

in the same boat so to speak
all over Lake Shore Drive
but I couldn’t tell her inside color
and to tell you the truth it didn’t matter
I was so glad to see her.

Miss Williams I asked
Was that a compliment or a sly slam
when thirty five years ago you said I was an oreo
white on the outside
black on the inside.

The New Math

I never understood the New Math,
and to be honest, I’m still not certain
what it even is (or has it been replaced
by a New to the Second Power Math),
though I’ve always liked the phrase
“cooking the books.” There’s
a cartoon in there somewhere,
an author at the stove, wearing mitts,
with a casserole made out of…

Hillary is smarter than me.
She understands both concepts,
inside out, upside down and backwards,
but when her people sit the rules committee down
to explain, they will be explaining
to people like me, who only know
that two plus two is four,
and who will shake their hands
and show them to the door.

Under the influence
Behind the wheel
Between the tale of two cities—
Baltimore & D.C. now.

Yet you were always exempt-
Georgetown, blue eyes,
“hot town summer in the city
brown girls so dark and pretty.”
Yet I did not want to let you go.

Just one kiss
Above Tridelphia,
An American town of dreams,
Buried for what?
Urban sprawl
That showed no sense

For community
(black)
For wetlands
(ours)
For the Piedmont Plateau.

Oh Maryland, My Maryland
Who owns you now?

Yet once, perhaps just once
Colonial whores predetermined
Our future
With a prayer.

In the quiet
Under the oaks
I find a way to deal
With your departure
But what say you,
Johnny Angel,
About this war now
That swallows our sons
and daughters.

KIMBERLY WILLSON studied poetry in undergraduate school with the late great poet William Taylor, and later, in graduate school, she studied the poetry of John Berryman in Henry Taylor’s poetry seminar. Henry won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for The Flying Change in 1984. She self-published a collection of poetry at sixteen called Feelings long before Barry Manilow heard the word. After the need for a second printing, she sought out a poetry professor at Finch College in New York City to show her the way.
