Weekend Edition April 2 / 3, 2005   Against the Grain By DAVID SMITH-FERRI On the second anniversary of the US/UK invasion of Iraq, 3/19/05 A roadside bomb in Aziziyah, 35 miles southeast of Baghdad, killed four women and three childrenAP 3/22/05 I Like a scythe, the merlin dropped on her long pole slicing along a corridor among the grape vines where the bird feeders hang, cutting down the house finch, and then, like stepping into a painting and disappearing without a stir or ripple on the surface of the canvas, she banked sharply through an open window in the bramble and wild plum trees, leaving behind nothing but the memory of red and of a bird that spoke with a hundred voices at once. II The news cut sharply against the grain of the season which is spring, the phoenix, the season of promise, not just by the calendar, but on the ground as well where new-leafed oaks and buckeyes startle us with a green so charged and vital it pierces us even as we are compelled to embrace it; pears, nectarines, and cherries burst in pink or white flowers; and twelve hour days trigger breeding among birds complete with costumes, music, and acrobatic dance. The news? After a day of snowboarding with his family, Nathan went to sleep Saturday night and never woke up. Hearing it, our minds lurched, though they understood immediately: the branch withered and dead before it could flower, before it could fruit. But our bodies refuse to believe. Our hands still expect to feel his hand, our ears to hear the crack of palm against palm in a typical high-five, our eyes await his starburst smile. On a weekday afternoon, seven hundred mourners gathered for a memorial service, tears and laughter, and story after story, the child's goodness, even greatness, but mostly his humanity shining through. We looked around at ourselves, astounded at the web of relationships centered about one family on one sixteen-year old boy, and even as we glistened with connectivity, we understood the web was torn, the pathway from person to person interrupted. Half naked, damn "gown" won't tie; regular steel invasions, cold; over-head television 24/7 (and this is the "good" nightmare, the one with health insurance). Still believe in Future as a pretense like "Humanity" or "Democrats," belief for belief's sake, so they don't call you "nihilist" or Gloomy Gus. So "iffy," really; unreliable; so not like we were taught... Worst of all, it comes -- listless, bored, humorless -- with Middle-Management-indifference. Regardless of despair (bottomless), or Herculean mastery of faith, -- not fate, faith -- or false good cheer; regardless of the utter fictions we indulge ourselves with between pills and roommates' "war stories" of meaningless suffering: "we're good people" and "we're worth it" (whatever "it" is) and "the 'girls' who clean our pans and ride the bus alone past midnight really do love us and think about us (alone on the bus past midnight) and want us to get well..." Even when we cover our eyes, put our hands to our ears, scream "Yonk! Yonk! Yonk!" it comes...it comes... regardless of our fear.
