Gaza
BY KEMMER ANDERSON
Unblinded Samson pilots his jet plane
Hugging columns of Hamas headquaters
Pulling down fire, iron, and rock on daughters
And sons – targets now multiplied and slain
By bombs that twist through the tunnels and rain
Flames through Rafah to seal all the borders.
Rockets respond with missiles and orders
Driving us to the abyss where insane
Military operations make mute
Supplies for food, water, blood transfusions,
And bandages among the dead hushed to cries
Of peace and politicians who refute
Resolution 242. Confusions,
Eyeless in Gaza, need insightful eyes.
KEMMER ANDERSON can be reached at kanderso@mccallie.org.
Manifest Destiny
BY EDWARD BEATTY
The hunter on the hillside camouflaged in sandstone, dirt,
and oak roots does not move, gives no command to his hound
disguised as a rotted tree stump covered by vines. It has been
a long time since the obedient best friend barked, howled
for food, growled, wagged its tail or even whimpered.
No native, soldier, or neighbor survives to hear breeze
coursing through pine needles as pleas, to search
for the man’s parents, wife, daughters, and sons
huddled underneath a mossy boulder.
In the valley where the victor dwelled a bleached flag
on a pole seems to wave surrender to an unseen enemy
while below it a satellite dish is a throne for a crow
and a flicker taps the roof of a rusted Cadillac.
EDWARD BEATTY lives in Franklin Grove, Illinois and can be reached at ebeatty@grics.net.
Off The Trail
BY DOUGLAS VALENTINE
We walked off the trail, long into the woods,
Stepping among feathery ferns.
We sat on a log, breathing fragrant air,
And I swooned, and fell, in a turn.
The time wrapped around me like fog –
The only sound I heard was your voice,
Calling me out from my slumber
To a world of infinite choice.
Had you left me on your shoulder,
Had you sung a sweet lullaby,
Glad would I have stayed forever,
Far from the hiker’s watchful eye.
DOUG VALENTINE is the author of The Phoenix Program and Strength of the Wolf. He can be reached at redspruce@comcast.net.
