When discussing GTO's internet service there are a few things to keep in
mind- and a few things to ponder:

-The people incharge of the network are not profrssional network admins.
They are doing the best they can learning as they go. Thus far I must say
that they are doing better than expected, and they have been more than
willing to listen to complaints and their responses have been quick and
efficient. Remember the proxy server?

-I would forgive just about anything that happens in the first month of
service as there must be some bugs and loose ends all around, as long as
that means that after all the mess is taken care of the service will be
uniformly good.

-It does appear that most of the problems were on the American side of the
uplink. Therefore the blame lies with Sprint for a lot of the downtime.

-DNS changes and such are not really important to you as a user. I have yet
to change my settings from when I was with CompuServe, my GTO connection is
working just fine.

-There are no manuals for MS Internet Explorer and its accessories. If you
need help then check Microsoft's online help. Usually when you first
install and run IE it takes you to a help page.

-I don't know if any of you have chosen the 50 rial plan. Don't you think
that we should get January for free? How on earth are we supposed to take
advantage of all that time we bought when the network was down for so long.

-GTO's homepage works fine here almost all the time. Maybe there's a
problem for people trying to get to it from outside Oman. That would be
another Sprint fault.

-GTO have not advised the users of how to change their plans. The PIN
numbers have not been given out to users. Therefore users are stuck with
their current plan for another month.

-Please come by IRC #oman on EFnet. Quite a few of us are there almost
nightly. Around 11:30pm Oman time during Ramadhan. Drop by for fun chat.
Channel is always open. Discussion is always fun.

Hopefully, Feb will be a real start for internet in oman.
