Three Poems by Kevin LeMaster

The Silence of Hummingbirds

The only sound

is an audible

her heart held

within tiny ribs

the beaten wing

produces waves

of fresh

pulsing low enough

to be

left with the taste

of silence

on her tongue

Strum Silent and Low

He strums without hands,

without fingertiped voices

to tell him note after note.

He wears socks with no shoes,

plucks chords with words

strung low like melting sin.

My hands could never touch

the beauty of design,

the sound of deep desire,

when it moves to another

and takes up residence

in the hollow of acoustics.

Whispering Silence

Touch the deaf part

of my mouth,

the part that

no longer listens,

but only hears

the breath of birds.

We say, “please”,

with no words,

our mouths wide

like the hungry embrace

when we first touched;

the gentle sweet smell

of winter’s thaw.
