Keeper of My Brother's Oil
a drama in two acts.

The son:

“I know that I shall greet my fate
somewhere in Arab air above.
The men below I’ve learned to hate,
but Mister Bush, I do not love.

A gallon more of Dixie blood
dampens sands of distant soil.
Flak has nipped another bud,
keeper of my brother’s oil.

Alabama was my state –
almost all of it, my home.
Tell my people not to wait.
I’ve repaid a life on loan.

Now I’m flying bluer weather,
landing in a greener field –
pilots, prophets, here together,
gazing down on desert shield…

We’re gazing down, we’re wondering whether
folks below, some century,
awake from war, their shit together,
will make some handsome history.”

The mom:

“I got a black eye in my yellow ribbon –
an Arab fist I’ll feel forevermore.
Seems he hardly even left his crib, an’
…here’s this coffin, shovin’ through the door...”

Dusty blood and rusty metal,
dunes from here to history,
words stripped nude, and dark the kettle,
dead, the people we set free.

O’s Elevator
A Modern Fable Semi-Inspired by a Belarusian Poet

Once upon a time
O was riding the elevator
the one of the great Empire State
when pursuant to some cunning advice

he pushed the button marked “Choice”
whereupon, along with O, it turned out
a majority of passengers got off
but O was ambitious and

sought to reach the top floor asap
heeding his trip planners’ advice
he boarded the elevator marked “A-stan”
a paint-over-job over the faded “cul-de-sac”

but—hark!—it still made an intermittent stop
on the “I-floor” which certainly lengthened
the trip, especially when the power blackout—
euphemistally called the “financial collapse” —

occurred and a number of folks on the elevator
began to grumble and show their dissatisfaction
since the ride became not as smooth as expected
one meek voice even suggested:  we should’ve put

the elephants in the freight elevator, but
O’s woes were just beginning
for he had to cope with passenger health issues
as well as alternative power sources for the elevator

O, too, found the trip a torture and would
not release incriminating photos
although O’s woes were steadily increasing
the elevator appeared to be moving nonetheless

though it became uncertain at what floors it
would stop and what stops it would miss
O’s woes continue to intensify but he is
still listening to the advice of his court jesters.

This modern fable has yet to find an ending
be it a happy or a sad one
for the elevator continues to move
mostly upwards albeit sort of in a staccato way.

Although this fable has all the modern trappings, an elementary
question arises:  What happens if some passengers get
motion sickness?
